Taikai High Voltage Switchgear, in collaboration with China Electric Power Research Institute (CEPRI) and Xi’an Jiaotong University, has achieved a global breakthrough in power grid protection! The world’s first 550kV trigger gap controlled adaptive energy absorption device TG1-AC550/63-L has passed all stringent type tests, marking a milestone in ultra-high-voltage (UHV) converter transformer explosion prevention.

Converter transformers in UHV DC systems face critical risks of oil-arc explosions during internal short-circuit fault. This innovation enables sub-millisecond fault current diversion (0.2ms triggering, 7-12ms full bypass), slashing arc energy by over 50% to neutralize explosion risks. Capable of withstanding 63kA for 80ms, 6 times and with 1.2x insulation margin, it sets a new global benchmark for grid resilience.

Set to debut at the ±800kV Gusu UHV Converter Station, this device offers a game-changing solution for safeguarding critical equipment. Its compact single-break design, dual-edge plasma triggering, and SF6 insulation recovery ensure rapid, reliable protection for transformers and power electronics valves.

Powered by industry-university-research cooperation, this project underscores China’s leadership in energy innovation. Kudos to all partners for turning cutting-edge R&D into enhanced grid reliability!
